DOC, Campania, Italy. In Spain it is known under the
name Garnacha. |
Geography
Widely planted throughout Europe, especially
Spain and sardinia. Also grown in Algeria, Israel,
Morocco, the USA and Australia. Also
used to make some of the better rosé wines
of Provence in southern France. |

Viticulture
Very tolerant of heat. Thrives well in the
hot climate vineyards of Spain and Southern France. |

Varietal/Blend
Blended, especially with Shiraz. When blended
with Tempranillo improves many Riojas. In
the warmer regions of California the Grenache
grape produces pale red wines that are mainly
useful for blends. Older vines can yield varietals
often as a rosé. |

Flavour
& Character
Ultra ripe, fruity flavours, predominantly
strawberry, coupled with a fiery spiciness. makes
fleshy, heady, very fruity wines in their youth |

Vinification
Often oaked as part of the Rioja maturation
process. |

Style
Ranges from good light styles to rich, strong,
velvety textured wines. |

Body,
Dry/Sweet
Wide ranging from light bodied delicious,
fruity rosés to rich dessert and fortified wines.
Notable for producing warm, full bodied wines
high in alcohol. |

Notes
It is the main grape used in the red wine blend
known as Chateauneuf-du-Pape makes good wine blends
under the appellation "Cotes du Rhone Villages". |
